About Us Chapters SW Virginia

Southwest Virginia Chapter

Southwest National Capital Lyme invites anyone with an interest in or involvement with Lyme, co-infections, Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia to its meetings. Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6-8PM at the Unitarian Church, 1301 Gladewood Drive, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

We are pleased to announce that Maud Steinberg and Mauricia Shanks will lead the group together.  Maud is the facilitator of the group and Mauricia is a Director on the Board of the National Capital Lyme Disease Association.

Maud Steinberg worked as a registered nurse in Denmark, France and Uganda; she speaks several languages.  In the US Maud worked for many years as a Case Manager in Home Health and a Clinician in Coronary care at UVA and she majored both in Nursing and in Business.   She is also a Reiki Master, practices yoga and meditation and has a well-rounded knowledge of alternative therapies and supplementation.  As a compassionate and caring person she is always willing to listen and to help others. Since her diagnosis last year she has been doing continuous research on Lyme and co-infections.  Maud understands the vast need for a support group in the Blacksburg area as well as a need for education and information about Lyme among the public at large.  Maud can be reached at blacksburglyme@gmail.com  or by phone at: 540-808-4980.

Mauricia Shanks runs a thriving dog and cat grooming business in Pearisburg, Virginia.  Bit by an infected tick in 2009, Mauricia  became the Erin Brockovich of Southwest Virginia, fighting to get her Lyme case reported by local and state health officials.  Because of her persistence and passion about Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases, Mauricia, became the first reported case of Lyme in Giles County, Virginia.  With her precedent, many more cases have started to be reported in the southwest region of Virginia.

Mauricia and her husband, a captain with the Giles County Sheriff’s Office, work as a team educating and promoting Lyme awareness with pet owners as well as residents in their community.  Mauricia can be reached at: mjpetgrooming@yahoo.com or by phone 540 921-2836.
